Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens fitted to a Canon EOS 5D MkII body.

Specification (in order of importance to me)

Focal length: 50mm
Weight: 130g
Closest focusing distance: 450mm
Filter thread: 52mm
Maximum aperture: f/1.8
Focusing: auto/manual

I originally bought this lens for an in-car setup, taking remotely controlled shots of cars following mine during a track day at Oulton Park.  It was mounted on a Canon EOS 20D in the boot of my car pointing out through a hole cut into the (temporary) boot lid.  The reason for using this lens was to cut my losses should there be an accident.  I'd much rather loose a cheap lens than an expensive zoom and this lens was very cheap.  In fact, bought new, it cost less than a tenth the price of my Canon 24-70mm standard zoom!

Once the track day was over, the lens didn't get much use besides casual family shots in low light, until one dull grey day I decided to do some lens testing in the back you do.  It turned out, this was one of the sharpest lenses I owned!  From f/5.6 and up, none of my expensive L series Canon zooms could touch it for overall image quality.  Added to which, it weighs almost less than nothing.  Sure, build quality and materials aren't exactly top notch and auto focusing isn't the fastest or most accurate, but for the money, who cares?  With a modern camera with live view focusing, it does the job very well (at least for stationary objects it does).
