UK Landscapes - Camera Equipment
Specification (in order of importance to me)
Focal length: 40mm
Closest focusing distance: 300mm
Filter thread: 52mm
Maximum aperture: f/2.8
I bought this lens as an alternative to my 50mm f/1.8 II standard lens purely for it's much smaller size. Build quality is an improvement, as is focusing, especially manual focusing, which I find important, although as there's no physical connection between the focus ring & the lens elements, it does feel a little strange. All focusing is done electronically by the stepper motor (STM) whether in auto or manual focus.
As far as image quality is concerned, it's at least as good as, if not better than my 50mm lens, being sharp corner to corner by f/5.6, which considering it's size & convenience, is a real bonus.
This lens is so small & lightweight, it can
easily be used as a general walkaround lens while I'm hiking through
the mountains, or at the very least, it'll be close to hand in a jacket
pocket so it can be swapped with my 20mm
lens as needed without having to go delving into my backpack.
